How Gatsby Saved a Korean male from 22 years of Hair Hell!

Gatsby Wax, specifically the Nuance Motion has dramatically given me more control over my super strong and stubbornly straight hair.  Gatsby  is undoubtedly the single best hair gel out there right now.

My Story

For a long time I struggled with styling my Korean hair.  I am adopted so don’t have any Asian influences to ask questions concerning what to use or how to use it.  When I was smaller I had a bowl cut that I tried to use the alcohol based gel on, you know the ones that come in a neon green or blue color.  These are absolutely worthless and I have no idea why they are even allowed to be sold!  Every time I would sweat playing sports my hair would sprout out like a huge mushroom and turn into what I like to refer to as my Az-fro.

I tried all different type of gel’s, waxes and even researched having my hair get relaxed so maybe it wouldn’t stand straight out anymore.  Eventually as a sophomore in college I came up with a way of being able to manage and control my hair to a certain extent.  I would have to wear a hat to “calm my hair down” meaning I had to wear a hat coming out of the shower wet and let it dry underneath my hat to make sure the hair would lay flat and be more receptive to molding.  I also found a new product that helped me WAY more than anything I tried previously called got2b glued.  This product held great and I was able to mold my hair to a degree I had never experienced previously.  There were drawbacks however; when it dried it got flaky and I would wake up with white flakes in my hair.  It also held too tight sometimes and it was difficult to have a new style or mold your hair differently after your initial styling.  There was a short time period in which to style your hair also, between 3-5 minutes average or else the got2b would be resistant to change.  So there were difficulties but it was manageable and the best option I had to date.

I used got2b for nearly 4 years before I decided to try to grow my hair out one more time.  (I had tried before but the lack of a product to effectively control my hair made me cut it every time!) Like I said I don’t have any Asian influences so I had to learn a little bit and experiment as I went along.  I got a name of a Korean hairstylist from someone in an Asian grocery store I occasionally frequent.  I peppered her with questions and showed her some pictures of what I wanted and she gently told me which ones were doable and which ones just didn’t fit my hair type.  Being familiar with Asian hair she cut it so it could be more manageable and the key thing was that she left my sideburns to grow so I could frame my face better!  This is a key point since before this I just got a straight edged cut that didn’t help to shape and frame my face.

I’ve been growing my hair for over 9 months now and have been using the Mandom Gatsby Nuance Motion (the yellow container) which is the newest product they have out for longer hair with a lot of success.  I get comments nearly everyday about how much longer my hair is and how good it looks.  Just the other day at the bar I had a cute chic tell me I had “perfect hair” :) .  The Nuance holds well enough to last all day but is very flexible so you can remold it if you wanted to!  A very important fact that I want to part with is that you need to use conditioner if you want your Asian hair to behave better, it will help to weigh down the straight hair.  I use Dove’s Extra Dry Hair shampoo and conditioner because my ex-girlfriend recommended it to me and it works great!

I’ve seen some complains online about how Gatsby is hard to wash out but I’ve had absolutely NO PROBLEMS whatsoever and I use it nearly everyday.

I’ve used the Loose Shuffle (orange container) a few times but for me that was too stiff for my longer hair, I’d definitely try it out when I cut my hair to a medium length though!  In fact some people might want to try a combination of two different Gatsby’s to get a customized feel.
